Naxul (San Ramon, CA)

So first question is how did you decided who to cosplay for Fanime ?

For Fanime this year, or for any con/cosplay, I just pick what I like!! For example, I was first drawn to Sheryl Nome cause I just really loved a lot of her outfits, all detailed and pretty and such. And then I got into the anime :3. As for my Chie Satonaka from Persona 4, my friends wanted to have a Persona 4 group, so I ended up as Chie!! Which was okay, I liked her in the game. Normally, my friends and I kind of decide almost 6 months in advance what we're going to do for each convention. I try to give myself as much time as possible for each costume-- even though I normally end up still sewing the night before the con till about 3 AM!!

lol ! I've heard many of the working till the last minute stories ! Tell me about the Sheryl Nome outfit and what went into making it.

Haha, I think working till the last minute is a common thing among cosplayers!

This version of Sheryl Nome was harder then I thought it would be. First off, it was hella hard to find reference pictures for this outfit. I searched for days just trying to find good pictures!!

The wig was hard to figure out at first. In the anime, Sheryl is blonde, but has this weird pink hint to it. After looking at many stills from the anime, I realized that only the shadows on her hair are pink. So what I did was buy a blonde curly wig, straighten the bangs, and then added the pink into the wig, but only where the light wouldn't really go (so like, under the curls for example). I used two different Prisma pens, Pink and Mulberry- it took about 2 hours to do but I like how it turned out!

The corset was a complete and total ordeal. At first, I was just going to buy a purple corset and add onto it. Well, the corset started to fall apart so I had to trash that idea. Instead, I covered the falling apart corset with a purple fabric and added on the red lines, red part up front and the white ribbon. I had to remake the purple cover twice because I had to keep in mind the fact that a corset brings you in and this fabric I was using did not stretch. The lace in the back had to be replaced so I just happen to had red ribbon lying around!

The skirt I wanted to look really fancy and poofy since that's what really drew me into the costume at first. I put one layer of tulle over the skirt and under the skirt, and I wore a petticoat I had underneath it. And then of course, I can't forget the butt bow! I wanted the bow to be big and stand up. So I put wonderflex inside of the fabric!!

The stockings & gloves were bought from we love colors.com and I added on the lace to the stockings. The choker, hair flower and little arm band didn't really take that much time to make and there's nothing really exciting to note about those.

omg, didn't realized how difficult it could be ! how was this compared to other outfits you've made before ?

oooo, hmmm.. Well, I can say for sure that I have dealt with difficult costumes like this before! Specially with upcoming projects.

I'd have to say that Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII) and Jean Grey (UnCanny X-Men) were probably just as difficult as Sheryl Nome. Lightning was difficult beause I first made her when the only pictures you could go off of were the ones ripped from the E3 trailers and there's a LOT of detail on that costume. Jean Grey was hard because I had to get the stockings/boot covers and gloves just right and the gold spandex was just not agreeing with my sewing machine-- so a lot of my Jean Grey is hand sewn.

You did a lot of Jean Grey hand-sewn ? Whoa, that must have taken some time ! Some cosplayers I've spoken to picked up sewing when they got into it while others had already been sewing for years before. How long have you been designing and putting together outfits..or the better question would be how long have you been
cosplaying ?

I slowly learned how to sew through the many years of watching my mother. Eventually, I asked her one day to teach me all of the basics and I learned the rest from trial and error. I'm still learning from each thing I sew, so I hope I'm getting better at it!!

I've been into cosplay since about 2004, but didnt start until about 2005. And I didn't start making my own until 2007. I really enjoy this creative outlet a lot and I hope that I don't stop any time soon!

I've asked folks on MySpace and Facebook for some question suggestions and a few I got were :

"How do you pick which character you want to portray?"

For most of my costumes, I normally just pick my favorite character from that Anime or Video Game!! I would rather cosplay as someone I liked, versus a character I could careless about. Or what happens sometimes is I'll be surfing the net and come across a new anime or video game, look at the characters and then check out the anime/game.

"Do you enjoy group or solo cosplay more?"

Ooo, that's hard. I honestly enjoy both! Groups are really great because you can get your friends into the group, or meet amazing new people by asking them to be in your group! I've done both and it's really fun! Specially with group photoshoots, you get to help each other pose and take fun/silly pictures together! Solo cosplay is also fun because it's easier to maintain, versus a group. Example, if you need to go somewhere, you don't feel the need to stay with your group just because of your costume. And what's also nice about solo is if you start to feel lonly in your solo cosplay, you can always try to find other cosplayers from the same series to chill with! But if I had to pick one- I would go with Group cosplay!

"And finally if cost, time and technology were of no matter, who would you cosplay ?"

Princess Midna, her true form, from The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I've wanted to cosplay as her for years now but I just havent gotten to it! Also, I would want to do more of Sheryl Nome's costumes!! I really love them all!!

Oh, how was the reaction to your outfit at the con ? Did kids rush up to you to get their picture taken with you ? ^^ Seen that happen many times :) lol !

I didn't have that happen in Sheryl, BUT I have had that happen in other costumes! When I was Giselle from Disney's Enchanted, sooooo many kids thought I was the real deal! I was walking around Fanime 2008 and I could hear this little girl off the street screaming "MOMMY, LOOK! It's Giselle!!! She's really real mommy! LOOK!!!". That was soooo funny and yet so cute! I also get a lot of little fans when I'm a comic book character. When I was Jean Grey at WonderCon this year, this little girl really wanted a picture with me-- it might of been just because of the bright colors, but it was just so adorable! She was so happy when she got the picture, she didn't want to leave me, she just kept staring up at me all happy!!

Oh, and also tell me how you got hooked on cosplay ? And what do you love about it or don't love about it ?

I've always loved dressing up because of my mother- she would make me costumes for Halloween because she loved to sew. So back in 2005, a friend of mine invited me to my first anime convention, Fanime. My friend and I had costumes from the previous Halloween to wear to the convention, so we went!! Once I saw all of the other cosplayers at the convention, I decided I wanted to go again and make more costumes for next year. And I've been cosplaying ever since!

I really love how creative people can get and it's cool to see the final product of every costume. I also really love meeting all the people through cosplay- I've met some pretty awesome people because of this hobby :]. And the only thing I really dislike about coplaying is how pricey it gets. I mean, with any hobby it's going to be a pretty penny, but still, it's money I could be spending on shopping for shoes, hahaha!!

I know ! I hear many stories about the $$$ ! Okay, thank you !
