James Murray of the East Coast Alliance of Cosplayers
I have been dressing up as since before “cosplay” was a thing lol but I don’t really consider myself a cosplayer. I’m what I like to call a “COSPERSONIST” the difference is, cosplayers will cosplay anybody they think is cool. I only dress as characters that I embody personally. I.e. CAPTAIN AMERICA, BLADE or SNAKE EYES. because I can relate to them on multiple levels.
The E.C.A.C. was formed 3 years ago when I decided to do a promotion for my retail store business The WARRIORS EDGE! So, I invited all the best local superhero cosplayers out for a meet and greet with community kids here in Norfolk, Virginia.
It wasn’t exactly a big hit but it was special! And I knew then there was something magical about it that made me realize it was a lot more good we could do as a group. We all agreed and soon planned another event. Then another.
To date we’ve worked numerous charity organizations including The Lupus Foundation of America, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter, TheUpCenter & Dimes 4 Homeless Veterans to name a few. But the one that affected me the most was the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorneys office Anti-bullying campaign in 2018. It is a subject I always had a soft spot for.
Today, the E.C.A.C. is a fully accredited 501c3 Non profit organization. Our mission statement is: Through the art of cosplay, we strive to uplift, encourage and inspire all those we reach using the one true super power of positive influence. We seek to instill the morals and values embodied by the most popular superhero characters in modern mythology to promote tolerance, acceptance and awareness to help build a better future for the generations that follow.
What inspires me the most is my team & their relentless desire to give freely of their time & their belief in our mission. Sometimes I’m hard on them because they forget there is a business side to this but I love each & every. one of them! lol
