R2D2 is my favorite character, I just love that droid so much. When Disney acquired Star Wars (amongst a bunch of other media) people were on the “so and so is my new favorite Disney princess” train and R2 was mine! I was in the mood to make a ballgown and thus Princess R2 became reality.

Princess R2 is a low budget costume! The whole costume was under $100 to make. I got the whole bolt of white fabric for $8 from my local reuse store. My wig was $10 during Halloween clearance, the blue and silver fabrics were reasonably priced and I didn’t need much. I created the appliqués by hand and added a few rhinestones here and there for some sparkle. I made the pattern myself and it came together really quickly.

A couple of my favorite moments in this costume are from my first time wearing her at Geek Girl Con in 2016. A vendor yelled “R2-QUEEN2” across the hall which made me laugh AND consider making a whole different kind of R2 gown! A little boy dressed as Link was so excited to take a picture with me because he loved R2D2 so much, it made my day. At Emerald City Comic Con people would see either me or my boyfriend first and when they put the two together the realization and glee was really fun.

I started cosplaying in 2016! I had been sewing for many many years and was in a bit of a creative rut. I made a Halloween costume with my best friend in 2015 (Sanderson Sisters) and she and my boyfriend both encouraged me to enter it into a cosplay contest (Emerald City Comic Con 2016)! I got in, competed, and it totally changed my world. I became friends with a bunch of brilliant creators and it really changed my life. The support I have received to keep being creative and push my skills has been outstanding. It’s given me a reason to create fabulous garments again!

Emerald City Comic Con is the biggest con in the PNW. Everything pop culture covering every inch of the convention center. I attended my first in 2013 and it definitely has changed. It’s bigger and now expanded to another venue for the main stage events. My favorite part is always supporting local artists, so I spend quite a bit of time in the “homegrown” section. I really like doing cosplay panels as well, I’ll be on two this year 🙂
